Training and Learning; An Inevitable Part Of The Human Life
Learning and training are just two different faces of the same coin but do we really understand the difference between them? Well, maybe or maybe not. Sometimes, we took training as learning without knowing what sets these two terms apart. Therefore, ProICT Training has come forward to highlight the key points between learning and training in order to allow candidates to take advantage of both.
What is learning?
Learning is an inevitable part of human life and our will to learn is something that differentiate us from the rest of the species. The process starts from the moment when a human is born on the earth and continues until it leaves the planet. Initially learning evolves their curiosity and further expands as their needs grow on the basis of their priorities and expertise. But the fire to learn something new always burns within the heart.
What is training?
On the other side, the training is the outcome of the desire to fill either the skill or knowledge gap. For people to know how to perform a job efficiently, they may need to be trained. Unlike the learning the training whether its offline or online certification and training course is episodic and is not a continuous process. Although learning is the ultimate objective of the training, it may or may not lead to learning. Also, the results differ on the basis of the learner’s ability, needs, motivation level, and commitment toward the training.
How learning differs from training?
There is a fine line between learning and training
When you desire to learn something with an objective to achieve a certain set of goals, you blur down the fine line that differentiate learning from the training. While the learning is often training-driven, the organization is organization-driven. The purpose of both may differ from each other but the ultimate goal is- a need to know.
Learning is the self-imposed act that doesn’t require any promotion. A person’s desire to obtain knowledge fuels the learning and he doesn’t need to rely upon the organization for that. If his “need to know” desire is strong then, he can go ahead without waiting for the organization to show up or provide any training.
Learning is continuous while training is short-term or event based
A wish to learn can erupt anytime, anywhere. For instance; in this lockdown I wish to become a PMP professional, and as my desire to learn is strong I would definitely try to find an online PMP certification and training course to fulfil my wish. As you can see here, training is the part of the learning or you can also consider it as an aspect of the learning.
As you can see here, my wish to become a PMP professional can start with PMP training but training is a periodic thing that often-termed event-based but learning is continuous and never ending due to the quest of learning.
Learning is centralized while training is decentralized
Since learning is led by the intention of the learner’s intentions, it is decentralized. In an organization or team every employee is responsible for its own learning.
On the other hand, training is centralized and the department that is responsible for the training part needs to be organized. The department which decides which offline or online certifications training course is to be allocated to each employee. Here the management follows the top to bottom approach controlled by the training department. Even though learning and training are linked to each other, it is obvious that training is the part of learning.
